'The Big Walk'
For a long time now there has been a pilgrimage to the shrine to Our Lady at Cleator in West Cumbria. Many people come from all over the north of England by car or by coach. But over the past few years, there has been a gathering group of intrepid young people who have made a three-day trek to the shrine across the Lake District by foot. It is always a challenge, but we take a cross with us to remind us that we are on pilgrimage and our spirits are always lifted by the sense of camaraderie that develops amongst the group, the beauty of the landscapes and the times of prayer which accompany our journey. But this year was even more of a challenge, as the pilgrimage coincided with the tail end of Hurricane Gustavo. The wind blew and it rained mercilessly, throughout the day and throughout the night for three days. We snorkelled our way across the mountains, waded through bogs, and dived head-first down the slopes. But nothing dampened the spirits of this merry band of pilgrims who - despite the desperate conditions - remained bright and cheerful.

Some comments from the young people
A fantastic experience to make new friends who have faith in common
I will be more open about my faith and get involved with events in my Parish and the Diocese
The night prayer was amazing, everyone got involved and weren’t afraid to express themselves
